Rolls-Royce Sub-Project

“The Virtual Engine – Processes, Methods and Optimisation of Rotor and Blade Construction“

As part of the Competence Center for Engine Technology established in the spring by Rolls-Royce Deutschland and seven chairs from the BTU Cottbus, the chair of Industrial Information Technology in co-operation with the “Fraunhofer Anwendungszentrum für Logistiksystemplanung und Informationssysteme” has been given the KBE (Knowledge Based Engineering) project.

The automobile industry, and in particular the aviation industry, integrate planning, processes and resources into one digital world of production in order to gain significant advantages with regard to competitiveness. The trend towards continuous process chains and networks and work distribution cannot be avoided.

Alongside other aspects, the subject of "knowledge-based engineering" is of essential importance.

Processes can only be described as ideally set-up when essential information and rules for operations, and especially specific knowledge, can be accessed at any time. Information can be obtained from (carefully maintained!) systems. However, one substantial problem is that knowledge contained in every imaginable form in a company (databases, in the heads of employees, etc.) must be made available and applicable.

As part of the “The Virtual Engine – Processes, Methods and Optimisation of Rotor and Blade Construction” project, methods and procedures for a sub-area of turbine design are to be developed that aim to optimise the construction process by applying knowledge-based-engineering.

The Chair of Industrial Information Technology has the expertise in the fields of processes and methods necessary in this context. Furthermore, the chair can also offer the software development skills needed for the project.
