Virtual products and production teaching platform

The “teaching platform” described here is a theoretical scenario demonstrating integrated information systems in a digital factory, which is intended to provide students with practical experience of developing and manufacturing products in a virtual environment. The platform uses real processes and real systems to apply and expand on knowledge gained in the lectures. This teaching platform is different from other conventional platforms that are primarily concerned with making teaching material available in electronic form.

This platform is entirely based on blended learning. Conventional teaching methods are combined with computer or web based eLearning components and real applications. 

The teaching platform should and must fit in with the structure of the target group, which is composed of various fields of study. The platform aims to consolidate the theoretical content of the lectures through practical exercises and experience; provide an experimental environment for student research projects and degree dissertations; and ensure targeted access to subjects related to business demands.

A model company is used to illustrate the wide use of data processing within business processes. A virtual automobile manufacturing company (cars) called “IIT-CAR AG” is set-up taking into account the completeness of processes, the speed of innovation (students should always be able to learn using the latest technology) and the nature of the examples regarding transfer into practice. A supplier and a logistics service provider are also included. A sub-area of public administration is integrated at a later stage to demonstrate eAdministration using the teaching platform.

Basically, all practical exercises connected to the above mentioned lectures are carried out using the teaching platform. This supports learning by guiding students through the teaching provided by the chair.
